Chirstmas in New York sent me to MOMA but my daughter gave me R.H. Ives Gammell's book TWILIGHT OF PAINTING. How conflicting! For Gammell and for Phillip Guston, both were shunned by the so-called critic and 'experts' of their times which caused a massive breakdown by each artist.See THE CAPTIVE (above) by Gammell done in 1931, and the Guston THE STUDIO done in 1969 below...

Both don excessive figurative imagery according to the self-proclaimed critics and elitists of the day.
Check out Hilton Kramer's scathing critique of Guston's changing figurative style..Kramer likens the Guston 'cartoon' to simplistic, humorous, popular Saul Steinberg. However, there is nothing humorous about Guston's 'cartoons.' Kramer has missed the pathos in Guston's work completely.
